The Great Author and Perfecter of Our Faith

Fix Your Eyes on the One Who Already Finished

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV - Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

OBSERVATION:
In Hebrews 12, the author points us to the ultimate example of faith—Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith. After listing the heroes of faith in chapter 11, he urges us to run our own race with the same endurance.

We’re not alone in this race—we are surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses.” Those who’ve gone before us are not spectators in the stands but faithful examples, cheering us on through their legacy of trust in God.

FOUR WAYS TO FINISH THE RACE OF FAITH:

1. Listen to the Cloud of Witnesses
As we study the stories of men and women in Hebrews 11, we find both encouragement and warning. Their lives cry out, “You can make it! Keep going! Don’t give up!” They remind us that this race has been run before—and it’s worth finishing.

2. Run With Endurance
Every runner knows endurance matters more than speed. The Christian life is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. That’s why we’re told to “lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us” (Hebrews 12:1). No one runs a race while carrying unnecessary weight or tripping hazards.

We run lighter, stronger, and freer—because Jesus already bore the ultimate weight for us on the cross.

3. Look to Jesus
Fix your eyes—not on your past, not on the other runners, and not on the pain—but on Jesus. He is the beginning and the end of our story. He not only started our faith but will also bring it to completion.

Just as Olympic runners fix their eyes on the finish line, we fix ours on Christ. Looking away from Him leads to distraction, disqualification, and discouragement.

4. Run With Joy
Running a race is rarely described as joyful—but in Christ, we can run with joy. Why? Because He ran first and won.

“For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

His victory gives us strength, and His joy becomes our fuel.

APPLICATION
Let this truth take root in your heart today:

Look to Jesus – He is the great author and finisher of our faith – run unhindered, run with endurance, and run with joy. When we look to HIM, we can finish our race.

PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for enduring the cross—for me. Thank You for running with joy and for finishing the race. As I run my race, help me fix my eyes on You. Let me draw strength from the witnesses who’ve gone before me and joy from knowing You’ve made a way. May my life encourage others to run, endure, and finish their race faithfully.
You can run with endurance, lay aside every weight, and finish your race with joy — because Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith, already ran it first and won.
