He Will Save

There Is Power in His Name

SCRIPTURE:
Matthew 1:21 NKJV - (21) "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

OBSERVATION:
What is in a name? In today's culture, names don't hold the same significance they used to. During the time of Jesus (and for generations before), your name was chosen based on what you would be or what your parents hoped you would become.

Why was the name Jesus so significant? Why not choose a name like John, Jim, or Andy?
“The name JESUS (‘The Salvation of Yahweh’) was fairly common in that day (Josephus mentions 12 different men named 'Jesus' in his writings), but it is supremely blessed in our day. As was later said by the Apostle Peter, there is no other name under heaven by which men must be saved (Acts 4:12).” – David Guzik.

“The name which the angel commanded Joseph to give to Mary's Child was one that was common at the time…its full significance was ‘The Salvation of Jehovah’.” – G. Campbell Morgan.
All other individuals named Jesus could only serve as symbols of the hope that would eventually arrive. Perhaps (just speculation) mothers hoped that their Jesus would be the one to bring this fulfillment. However, they did not understand or realize what it would truly take to save us.

Jesus was His name; he would be the Salvation of Yahweh. His name truly reflected who He would be. It was no longer hope but had become a reality. God’s Salvation had arrived!

We know this Jesus as Jesus Christ. Christ was not His last name but His title. He was not just as His name said, “The Salvation of Yahweh.” He was the Messiah, or the Christ, as His title and purpose for coming.

“You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
“This description of the work of Jesus reminds us that Jesus meets us in our sin, but His purpose is to save us from our sins. He saves us first from the penalty of sin, then from the power of sin, and finally from the presence of sin.” – David Guzik.
APPLICATION:
Jesus was not just the hope of salvation; He was and is salvation itself. He truly came to save us from our sins, the penalty of our sins, and the power of our sins.

John 8:34-36 NLT - (34) Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. (35) A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. (36) So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

Because Jesus died in place of our sins, we are no longer bound by them. What is it that is binding you and me today? Let Him set us free, because HE WILL SAVE and still does.

PRAYER:
Thank you, Jesus, for salvation— a gift I genuinely don’t deserve! Break the chains in my life that still need breaking so I may be truly free.
A name that truly breaks the chains that bind us!
