Saw and Heard – Jesus

When All Hope Seems Gone

SCRIPTURE:
Mark 5:6, 22, 27 (NKJV) - When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. ... And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet ... When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.

OBSERVATION:
Mark chapter 5 presents the individual stories of four people who needed Jesus. We see a demon-possessed man, a religious man, and a woman who had been sick for many years. Each story shows that, despite their different struggles, everyone shares a common need: hope and salvation, which can be found only in Jesus.

We see the man possessed by “Legion.” It was not just one, but a reference to the many demons afflicting him.

According to the Outline of Biblical Usage, a legion was a body of soldiers whose numbers varied over time. During the era of Augustus, it is believed to have consisted of 6,826 men, including 6,100 foot soldiers and 726 horsemen.

All you need to do is read the story and realize that this man needed salvation. In the eyes of the world, all hope was gone. Everyone, including the church, had even rejected him, because no one could help him - except Jesus.

Mark 5:6 NKJV - When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.

Next, Jairus approaches Jesus on behalf of his dying daughter. All hope was lost, and no one could help - except Jesus.

Mark 5:22 NKJV - And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet ...

Lastly, we see a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. According to the law (Leviticus 15), she was ceremonially unclean, which kept her from her family and from worship.
By the very law of her people, she was divorced from her husband, and could not live in her home; she was ostracized from all society, and must not come into contact with her old friends; she was excommunicated from the services of the synagogue, and thus shut out from the women’s courts in the temple. - G. Campbell Morgan.
Mark 5:27 NKJV - When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.

APPLICATION:
In the 1980s, Billy Graham stated this:
Where is the hope? I meet millions who tell me that they feel demoralized by the decay around us - where is the hope? The hope each of us has is not in who governs us, or what laws are passed, or what great things we do as a nation. Or hope is in the power of God working in the hearts of people - that is where our hope is in this country, that is where our hope is in life… Hope is the greatest need of our generation. The widespread feeling of this day is one of hopelessness and helplessness.”- Billy Graham.
Not much has changed over the years. Many are still hopeless! Many are even outcasts from the church. Chained to addiction(s), their addiction clings on like “Legion.” To the point of death, with no hope, and wasting all their resources, only to come up empty. No one can help but Jesus.

For every man (demonic and ruler), woman, and child—there is hope! In each case, they saw and heard Jesus, and salvation came.

What does the world need today? HOPE, JESUS - “The power of God working in the hearts of people, that is where our hope is in this country, that is where our hope is in life.”

Romans 1:16 NKJV - For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness? None but Jesus! Next time you feel the need to tell the world how messed up it is, make sure you include the message that NOTHING can fix the problem—BUT JESUS! They need to see Him and hear Him!

PRAYER:
Jesus, help me be a light in this dark world. Please guide me to warn others and offer hope. May the world see You and hear You through my life. Use me to bring Your hope to a hopeless, lost world.
No matter the struggle, the answer remains the same—see Jesus, hear Jesus, and find hope in Him alone.
