Jesus is Greater than our Doubt

Faith Isn't the Absence of Doubt — It's the Choice to Trust Anyway

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 11:1 CSB - Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.

OBSERVATION:
In Hebrews 11, the author begins with a foundational declaration:

Hebrews 11:1 CSB - Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.

This is not a call to perfect, doubt-free belief. It’s a call to trust—to rely on, cling to, and act on what God has said, even when we don’t see the outcome.

Hebrews 11:6 CSB - Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Faith, then, is relational trust in a faithful God.

This chapter, often called the “Hall of Faith,” recounts the lives of men and women who lived by faith—not perfectly, but persistently. They stumbled, questioned, and at times even laughed at God’s promises (as Abraham and Sarah did), yet they always returned to this truth:

The One who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 11:13 CSB - These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.

They believed beyond what they could see. In doing so, their hope became proof of God’s faithfulness.

EXAMPLES OF FAITH:
  • Abraham laughed at the promise, but later trusted God enough to offer his son as promised.
  • Sarah, though barren and past childbearing age, “considered that the one who had promised was faithful.”

Hebrews 11:11–12 (CSB) – “By faith even Sarah herself... received power to conceive... since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful.”

Hebrews 11:17–19 (CSB) – “By faith Abraham... offered up Isaac... He considered God to be able even to raise someone from the dead.”

That phrase—“he considered God to be able”—is the key to their legacy of faith.

APPLICATION:
Faith isn’t about having no doubts. It’s about choosing to trust even when doubts whisper loudly.

“By faith” appears 22 times in this chapter. That repetition reminds us: Faith isn’t a single moment—it’s a lifestyle of learning to lean on God.

Like Abraham, Sarah, and others, we can say:

“I consider that the One who promised is faithful.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 CSB - Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.

“Worry is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere.”
And when worry creeps in—when we feel stuck in that “rocking chair” of anxiety.
The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of faith is the end of anxiety. – George Müller
PRAYER:
Thank You, Jesus, that You are faithful—even when I am faithless. Help me trust You more.  May my life, when it draws to a close, be remembered as a journey of faith—not perfect faith, but persistent trust in a perfectly faithful God.
The heroes of Hebrews 11 weren't perfect believers — they were persistent ones who kept coming back to this one conviction: the One who promised is faithful.
