Jesus the Greater Sacrifice

Not Covered, Not Postponed — Removed

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 9:25-26 CSB - He did not do this to offer himself many times, as the high priest enters the sanctuary yearly with the blood of another. Otherwise, he would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. But now he has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the sacrifice of himself.

OBSERVATION:
In Hebrews 9, the author reveals that the earthly tabernacle, the high priest, and the sacrifices under the Old Covenant were shadows—representations of something greater: the heavenly reality.

Jesus is not only the Great High Priest but also the perfect and final sacrifice. Unlike the earthly priests, who had to offer sacrifices year after year, Jesus offered Himself once for all, perfectly satisfying God's justice.

David Guzik explains it well:
If the sacrifice of Jesus were not perfect, then it would have to be continual and constant — even since the foundation of the world. Imperfect sacrifices must be repeated continually, but a perfect sacrifice can be made once for all time, and genuinely put away sin (not just cover sin, as with sacrifice under the Old Covenant). The message is clear: He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. – David Guzik
This is the heart of the gospel: Jesus appeared to put away sin through His own sacrifice. No more covering up—He removed it.

Because Jesus is greater, we now have complete and eternal atonement. Our sins—past, present, and future—have been dealt with once and for all.

APPLICATION:
Your sin has been put away—not just covered, not postponed, not pending. Forgiven. Cleansed. Removed.
  • Past
  • Present
  • And future
God has taken our sin and cast it into the lake of no remembrance—and posted a sign that reads: NO FISHING ALLOWED. – Billy Graham
We don’t have to live in guilt or shame. Jesus remembers our sins no more. We may remember, but He doesn’t—and He doesn’t hold them against us.

So live boldly. Live joyfully. Live free. Live forgiven.

PRAYER:
Thank You, Jesus, for your sacrifice – for the forgiveness of sin. Thank You that it is complete, perfect, and in Your hands – unable to be defiled by me. May I walk in grace today – living my life in a way that says – I AM FORGIVEN!
Jesus didn’t offer a temporary fix that needed repeating — He appeared once, sacrificed Himself perfectly, and put away your sin for good, so stop fishing in the lake God posted “No Fishing Allowed.”
