Jesus Is Greater Than Our Works

Stop Striving for What Faith Simply Receives

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 4:10-11 CSB - For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his. Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.

OBSERVATION:
In Hebrews 4, the author explains why some have not yet experienced the rest God promised. The reason? They are still striving for it—trying to earn what was meant to be received by faith.

Leon Morris captures the heart of this rest.
There is a sense in which to enter Christian salvation means to cease from one’s works and rest securely on what Christ has done.  - Leon Morris
David Guzik expands the idea:
This cessation from works as a basis for righteousness fulfills our “Sabbath rest.” God rested from His works on the original Sabbath of Genesis 2:2 because the work was finished. We cease from self-justifying works because Jesus finished the work on the cross. – David Guzik
We are told in Hebrews to make every effort to enter this rest—not by works but by dependence on what God has already accomplished through Christ. This “effort” is the posture of faith, not performance.

So how do we enter this rest without striving? Through living, growing, and trusting faith. The key to cultivating that faith is God’s Word.

APPLICATION:
So how do we stop striving and start resting?

We rest in the Word—by opening ourselves daily to Scripture, letting it do the work in us that we could never do ourselves.

Hebrews 4:12 CSB - For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Charles Spurgeon reflects on the power of the Word:
A sword with two edges has no blunt side: it cuts both this way and that. The revelation of God given us in Holy Scripture is edge all over. It is alive in every part, and in every part keen to cut the conscience, and wound the heart. Depend upon it, there is not a superfluous verse in the Bible, nor a chapter which is useless. – Charles Spurgeon
Read the Bible—cover to cover. Let it do what only it can do: transform, convict, comfort, and lead you to rest.

When you stop striving and start depending, the Word of God becomes your gateway to true rest—a rest that comes not from effort but from trusting in a finished work.

PRAYER:
Thank You, Jesus, for Your Word. It gives me life, strength, understanding of who You are, and true rest. Help me treasure Your Word as a priceless possession. May I cease striving and enter Your rest—trusting that Your Word is enough.
God's rest isn't earned by effort — it's entered by faith, and the Word of God is the living, active guide that leads you out of striving and into the rest Christ already secured.
