Jesus is Greater than Moses

The Law Could Lead You There — Only Jesus Can Give You Rest

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 3:3 CSB - For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house.

OBSERVATION:
In Hebrews 3, the author tells us that Jesus is greater than Moses—not by diminishing Moses, but by fulfilling the very law Moses delivered.

To the Jewish people, Moses was revered as a patriarch, deliverer, and prophet, the one who brought the Law. He authored the Pentateuch, received the very words of God, and led the people through the wilderness. Yet even Moses himself prophesied that a greater Prophet would come.

Deuteronomy 18:18 CSB - "I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.”

Yet many Hebrews stumbled over this truth—that Jesus was the promised Prophet, the fulfillment of what Moses anticipated. This is why the writer of Hebrews says they failed to enter God’s rest—because of unbelief.

Twice in this chapter, the warning is clear.

Hebrews 3:7-8 CSB - Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,

Hebrews 3:15 CSB - As it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.

Charles Spurgeon offers this sobering insight regarding the Holy Spirit's cry towards unbelief:
Besides, he waits to execute his favourite office of a Comforter, and he cannot comfort an ungodly soul, he cannot comfort those who harden their hearts. Comfort for unbelievers would be their destruction. As he delights to be the Comforter, and has been sent forth from the Father to act specially in that capacity, that he may comfort the people of God, he watches with longing eyes for broken hearts and contrite spirits, that he may apply the balm of Gilead and heal their wounds. – Charles Spurgeon
How do we guard against unbelief and hard hearts?

Hebrews 3:13 CSB - But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception.

APPLICATION:
Are you experiencing God’s rest?

Are you worn out from trying to live up to the law of Moses—trying to be “good enough”—only to find your heart growing harder with each failure?

Jesus is greater than the Law. He came to fulfill it and to offer what Moses could not: grace, mercy, and rest.

Today, if you hear His voice, don’t harden your heart.

Rest awaits. Will you accept it?

PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You that You are greater than Moses—greater than the Law. Thank You for fulfilling what I could never fulfill. Thank You for Your grace and mercy, which bring rest to my weary soul. Today, help me not only to rest in You but also to encourage others daily—so they, too, may find true rest in Your finished work.
Moses could deliver the Law, but only Jesus could fulfill it — and the rest He offers is what every soul worn out by striving has been desperately searching for.
