Jesus is Greater…

The Work Is Finished, and He Is Seated

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 1:3-4 CSB - The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.

OBSERVATION:
The author of Hebrews opens the letter by declaring the central truth: Jesus is greater—greater than all. He is the Son of God, the very expression of God in human form.

One of the major stumbling blocks for the religious leaders in the Gospels was Jesus’ claim to be equal with God. Yet Hebrews boldly affirms that Jesus was not only claiming to be God—He is God.

To the Hebrew audience, deeply rooted in their laws, traditions, and reverence for the patriarchs and prophets, this letter declares that Jesus is greater than all of them.

John 1:14 CSB - The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Colossians 1:15-16 CSB - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -- all things have been created through him and for him.

He was present at creation. Everything was made by Him, through Him, and for Him.
And the greatest tragedy of all—many Hebrews missed it. They’re still waiting for the Messiah, even though the Messiah has already come—Jesus.

(Vs 3) After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

The work is complete. He fulfilled the law, made atonement once for all, and now sits at the right hand of the Father—in authority, in victory, in glory.

As verse 4 reminds us:

He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.  So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Griffith Thomas captures the fullness of Christ in these first few verses:
  • Christ the Heir.
  • Christ the Creator.
  • Christ the Revealer.
  • Christ the Sustainer.
  • Christ the Redeemer.
  • Christ the Ruler.
  • Christ Supreme.

APPLICATION:
Jesus is greater: Greater than…
  • My sin
  • My shame
  • My guilt
  • My trials
  • My flesh
  • Death and hell
  • Every earthly authority – He is God

If He is truly greater, why not trust Him with everything? He is not only greater than some things—He is greater than everything.

PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for being greater than all—greater than my sin, my fear, my burdens, and my failures. Thank You for finishing the work of redemption and for sitting at the right hand of the Father in glory. Help me to live as if I believe You are greater—so others may see and know that You alone are worthy, supreme, and sufficient.
Jesus isn't just greater than some things — He is greater than everything, and the proof is that after making purification for sins, He sat down in victory at the right hand of God.
