Be Strong in

Grit Will Wear Out — Grace Won't

SCRIPTURE:
2 Timothy 2:1 CSB - You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

OBSERVATION:
As fathers—especially of young men—what do we teach them to be strong in?

Often, we emphasize strength of character, morality, and resilience. “Be a man’s man,” we say. “Don’t be weak.”

But Paul, writing to Timothy, says something different.

“You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” — 2 Timothy 2:1

He doesn’t just say “be strong”—he says, “be strong in grace.” He begins with “my son”—a term of deep affection and emphasis. Paul underscores something vital: True strength is rooted in grace.

Yes, Paul had already earlier encouraged Timothy to be strong:

“Therefore, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is in you... For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.” — 2 Timothy 1:6–7 (CSB)

Paul reminded Timothy that boldness in his calling, spiritual gifts, and leadership would come not from striving but from God’s grace.
This is one of the twenty-five times Paul encouraged Timothy to be strong and endure in his work in Ephesus. Perhaps Timothy was naturally timid and easily discouraged, or perhaps he was a man of normal courage who had great responsibilities. He needed to be told often, “Be strong.” – David Guzik

Grace here has its simplest theological meaning, as the divine help, the unmerited gift of assistance that comes from God. – J.D. White

There is nothing that can makes us as strong as saying, “I am a child of God in Jesus Christ” and “I have the love and favor of God even though I don’t deserve it.” That is the strength that comes by grace. – David Guzik
APPLICATION:
Be strong in grace – not just grit.

Let grace be the foundation of your morals, convictions, and character. Through God's grace, we can be strong.

Isaiah 40:29-31 CSB - He gives strength to the faint and strengthens the powerless. Youths may become faint and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who trust in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not faint.

Grace is the fuel for endurance. When your fire begins to fade, grace rekindles the flame.

PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for grace! May I be strong in it. May it guide and shape my character, convictions, and life. May I always remember that grace changes everything. When I am weary, let grace renew me. When the fire fades, let grace rekindle it.
True strength isn't found in willpower or self-reliance — it's found in grace, the undeserved, inexhaustible gift of God that fuels everything He calls you to endure.
