The Gospel Was Deposited in You — Guard It Well
SCRIPTURE:
1 Timothy 6:20-21 NKJV - O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge-- by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
OBSERVATION:
As he closes his letter to Timothy, Paul leaves him with a final charge: "Guard the Gospel."
Let’s look at how this is rendered in different translations of 1 Timothy 6:20:
Each phrase helps paint a fuller picture. In Greek, this concept carries the weight of something valuable that’s been deposited, entrusted, and committed to our care. Interestingly, this exact phrase appears only three times in the New Testament—all in Paul’s letters to Timothy. That tells us something about every believer's personal responsibility to guard the Gospel.
Paul warns Timothy to avoid things that contradict it:
“...profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge...” – 1 Timothy 6:20
This “knowledge” may sound impressive, but it is often empty, misleading, and dangerous. Paul draws a line here—just as Jesus did in John 14:6:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Any teaching that denies this truth is not knowledge—it’s foolishness disguised as wisdom.
APPLICATION:
Guard the gospel – the good news of Jesus Christ – and let no one say there is another way. Contend for it, stand on it, and live it out in your daily life. Because it has been:
When we guard the Gospel well, its light continues to shine. When we don’t, we drift away from the cross—the crux of our faith.
PRAYER:
Jesus, help me to be faithful to what You have committed, entrusted, and deposited into my life—the Gospel. May I never turn from it or water it down. You alone are the way, the truth, and the life.
