Whatever You Do – Do in the Name of Jesus
Let Jesus Be the Filter Before You Speak or Act
SCRIPTURE:
Colossians 3:17 CSB - And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
OBSERVATION:
How many of us struggle with a lack of filter—saying or doing things we later regret? Sometimes we realize we've done more harm than good. Other times, we're unaware of the impact our words or actions have had.
But Paul gives us a solution: We have a filter. His name is Jesus.
When we run our thoughts, words, and actions through the filter of Jesus, we begin to reflect His character. That’s exactly what Paul exhorts believers to do in Colossians 3:12–16 (CSB).
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
When we rely on Jesus as our filter, we become more like Him.
These lead to two powerful outcomes: peace and thankfulness (v. 15).
The key to it all is found in verse 16: “Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you…”
Scripture is the filter that brings the life of Jesus into our everyday words and actions. It keeps our hearts aligned with His. Be in His word daily – moment by moment.
Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
APPLICATION:
When we allow God's Word to dwell richly in us, it becomes the filter through which we speak, act, and respond. The result? The very qualities Paul outlined begin to grow in our lives.

Whenever there is a doubtful issue to be decided, and by one course your peace may be disturbed, whilst by another it may be maintained, choose the things that make for peace, whether for yourselves or others. Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart today. Let His Word be your filter. Let His life shape your speech and actions. When we do, we experience not only inner peace but also relational peace—peace with those around us. Our lives begin to reflect not only what we believe but who we belong to.
PRAYER:
Jesus, forgive me for the times I’ve spoken or acted without filtering through You. Too often, I respond in ways that do not reflect You. Today, help me let Your Word and Your peace rule in my heart. May I see every situation through the lens of Your character. Give me strength by Your Spirit, clarity through Your Word, and a life that points others to You.
