SCRIPTURE:
Ephesians 2:4-5 CSB - But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!

OBSERVATION:
In Ephesians 2, Paul outlines three foundational truths of the Christian faith:

Mercy, Grace, and Peace—each anchored not in us but in God alone.

• Mercy – We have received it solely because of God’s character, not our merit.
• Grace – It came to us through Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross.
• Peace – Christ Himself broke down the dividing wall of sin, thereby making peace between God and us.

Paul uses past-tense phrases to describe our former condition:

• “You were dead” (v.1)
• “We all previously lived” (v.3)
• “You are no longer” (v.19)

These statements point to a transformation—a dramatic shift in status, identity, and relationships. The turning point of that transformation is captured in two powerful words:
 
“But God...”
The word “but” contrasts what was with what is now. It highlights what was impossible without God’s intervention.

But God…
“…who is rich in mercy, because of His great love…” (v.4)
“…made us alive with Christ…” (v.5)
“You are saved by grace!” (v.5, 8 – repeated for emphasis)

And not only that: “…now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace…” (v.13-14)

Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, mercy, grace, and peace are not only available—they are ours. They are not temporary. They are both past and present—we have received them and continue to walk in them today.

APPLICATION:
Whatever you are facing today, remember this:
 
“But God…”

Bring Him into the equation.

When we can’t—He can.

Walk in the truth of who He is and the power of what He’s done. Walk in the promises of God – He is faithful, and He will see you through. When we can’t, He can!

PRAYER:
Father God, thank You that Christ died for me while I was still a sinner.

Thank You for Your mercy—that I don’t receive what I deserve.
Thank You for Your grace—that I receive what I could never earn.
Thank You for Your peace—that I am no longer an enemy, but a beloved child.

Let me live today with “But God” confidence—knowing that in every circumstance, You are able and willing to intervene with power, love, and faithfulness.
