Common Faith

One Way, One Truth, One Common Faith

SCRIPTURE:
Titus 1:4 CSB - To Titus, my true son in our common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

OBSERVATION:
Is it possible to have a common faith? Does this mean we will have a faith compatible with all religions? Only if they believe in Jesus as the Savior, sent by God, through whom grace and peace are given.

John 14:6 NKJV - Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The only way to share a common faith is through the finished work of Jesus Christ—He is the only way to the Father.

John Calvin affirms this beautifully:
The Son has brought to us salvation from the Father, and the Father has bestowed it through the Son. – John Calvin
Through Christ, we have received grace—God’s unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor given to the infinitely undeserving. As it’s often said:

G.R.A.C.E. — God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

What has this grace accomplished?
  • We’ve been forgiven.
  • We’ve been washed and regenerated.
  • We are no longer guilty or condemned for our sin.

As a result, we now have peace:
  • Peace with God — We are no longer enemies but beloved children, adopted through Christ.
  • Peace of God — A supernatural assurance that we are secure in Him because His work is complete.

Philippians 4:7 CSB - And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

APPLICATION:
We can share a common faith, but it must be anchored in Jesus Christ alone.

We must hold fast to the truth of John 14:6—that Jesus is the only way to the Father and the only one who can atone for our sin.

As has been said in church history:

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”

Let us be united in the essentials of the faith and gracious in the rest.

PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for the grace and peace You have given me through Your death on the cross. Thank You that through You, we can share a common faith—one centered on truth, not compromise. You are the way, the truth, and the life. Because of You, I will see the Father. And so will all who believe in Your death, burial, and resurrection.
A common faith isn't about agreeing on everything — it's about being united in the one essential thing that matters: Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father, and everything else flows from that.
