March 13 – Acting As Children Imitating the Father’s compassion Luke 6:35-36 NLT - "Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. Jesus teaches that true children of God imitate the Father’s compassion by loving even their enemies. While it is easy to love those who love us, Christ calls us to show kindness, generosity, and mercy without expecting anything in return. This kind of love reflects the heart of God, who showed compassion to us while we were still sinners. Calling All Sinners The Great Physician still calls the broken Luke 5:31-32 NLT - Jesus answered them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor--sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent." Jesus called Matthew, a despised tax collector, to follow Him, showing that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. While religious leaders criticized Jesus for associating with sinners, He explained that the sick—not the healthy—need a doctor. His mission was to call those who recognize their need for repentance and healing. Jesus began His ministry by declaring that the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in Him and that the Lord’s favor had come. Though the people of Nazareth heard His gracious words, many struggled to believe because they only saw Him as Joseph’s son. Yet Jesus’ mission was clear—to bring good news, freedom, healing, and salvation through God’s grace. Slaves and Sandals The Humility of John the Baptist Luke 3:16 NLT - John answered their questions by saying, "I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am--so much greater that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. John the Baptist preached repentance and called people to genuine change, but he made it clear that he was not the Messiah. In deep humility, he declared that he was not even worthy to untie the sandals of the One who was coming after him—Jesus. And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large. The women arriving at Jesus’ tomb in Mark 16 worried about who would move the large stone, only to find it already rolled away. The stone was not removed for Jesus’ sake, but so they—and we—could see that He is risen and alive. Their grief was instantly transformed into joy, reminding us that God often removes obstacles we cannot move ourselves. Carry Jesus’s Cross Carrying What Only Christ Could Bear Mark 15:21 NKJV - Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. Simon of Cyrene, who carried Jesus’ cross, reminds us that while Simon could help carry it briefly, only Jesus could truly bear it. Simon’s role shows our human limitations—we may want to help, but we cannot atone for sin or bear what only Christ was meant to bear. Jesus alone endured the cross fully and willingly so that redemption could be accomplished. Anointing, Betrayal, and Denial Three Responses, One Savior Mark 14:9 (NKJV) - "Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her." We see three responses to Jesus in Mark 14: the woman who anointed Him in worship, Judas who betrayed Him, and Peter who denied Him. All three encountered the same Savior, were sinners, and had the opportunity to seek forgiveness. Two came humbly to Jesus and found restoration, while one hardened his heart and walked away. Abundance vs Poverty Giving What We Have, Where We Are Mark 12:44 NKJV - "For they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." The widow’s offering in Mark 12:44 challenges us to think beyond money and consider how we give our time to God. Like the rich who give out of abundance, we often postpone serving until we feel we have “more” time, while the widow models faithful giving out of what she has in the moment. The message is that service is not about how much time we possess, but about a willing heart to serve where we are. Removing Difficulties Faith That Trusts God with the Mountains Mark 11:22-24 NKJV - So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. Jesus calls His followers to place their faith fully in God, not in outcomes, feelings, or formulas. Using the image of mountains, Jesus teaches that faith-filled prayer trusts God to deal with life’s greatest difficulties, whether by removing them or giving grace to overcome them. True faith believes God hears and responds, leading us to pray more earnestly and dependently. When we trust Him, God makes mountains into plains by His Spirit and grace.   Read More
